Patient Concerns
If you are thinking about bariatric surgery and are having doubts about whether it is right for you, you are not alone. Wondering if bariatric surgery is right for you is a very common concern. Bariatric surgery is a life-changing procedure, and making that decision requires research, a good amount of reflection, and discussion with your doctor.
The fear of surgery is not irrational or abnormal; in fact, it’s very common. If the idea of surgery or anesthesia scares you, counter the fear by finding out more. If you are concerned about short- or long-term complications, you can talk about them with your surgeon. Every surgery has risks, and your surgeon should discuss the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery with you.
If you choose to have bariatric surgery, your choice should be based on discussions between you and your doctor, including goals and strategy for long-term care.
Studies show that bariatric surgery effectively can improve and resolve many weight-related health conditions.

Timeline For Bariatric Surgery
Upon completing your consultation with Dr. Alshkaki, you will immediately begin your journey toward Bariatric surgery. Listed below is a detailed timeline of events.
1.) Consultation with the surgeon, which is where you’ll receive a folder of forms and tests to complete. This folder is to be kept, and brought to every office visit.
2.) You will begin to have all of the tests that the doctor has recommended for you. (Please give the list of tests to your primary care physician, who will aide in their completion.)
3.) Upon completion of tests/forms, you will then have to fax or bring everything to the office. Without all of the tests being completed and sent to the office, we cannot submit anything to your insurance company.
4.) Our office will call you to set up your second appointment with the surgeon to review your completed tests, and explain what your next steps will be for surgery. At that time you will also be notified of the progress of our submissions to your insurance company. During this appointment you will be given an “what to expect . . . “packet, which details what to expect in the hospital, during and after surgery care.
5.) Would like you to call 202-715-4866 to schedule a preoperative orientation class attendance at George Washington University Hospital.
6.) Until your surgery date you will not see the doctor again. However you will continue to receive phone calls from the office regarding: Surgery date, insurance needs, and details for surgery day preparation.
7.) Postoperatively you will be expected to have the first one week in office follow-up with the doctor. During this appointment the doctor will do a physical exam and speak to you about the last packet of information that will be given to you. Which details you’re after surgery diet and care. Your next appointment will also be given at this appointment.
8.) Is a good practice to have regular meetings with the Dilatation and as we all know bariatric surgery is all about maintained long term eating behavior modification.
Should you have any questions regarding anything pertaining to the status of your upcoming surgery please do not hesitate to call the office.
